QUY TẮC PHÁT ÂM TRONG TIẾNG ANH:
a. Cách phát âm của một số nguyên âm và phụ âm
Hầu hết các chữ được viết dưới dạng ee (meet), ea (meat), e-e (scene) đều được phát âm thành /i:/. Trường hợp e (me), ie (piece) cũng được phát âm như trên nhưng không nhiều.
Chữ e (men) hay ea (death), ie (friend), a (many), ai (said) được phát âm là /e/.
Hầu hết các chữ được viết là ar, al thì được phát âm là /a:/. Chữ a trong ask, path, aunt cũng được phát âm là /a:/. Các chữ viết là ear, ere, are, air, thì được phát âm là /eə/ (ngoài heart được phát âm là /ha: t/).
Các chữ được viết là a-e (mate) ay (say), ey (grey), ei (eight), ai (wait), ea (great) thì khi phát âm sẽ là /ei/.
Các chữ được viết là a thì phát âm sẽ là /æ/ (Trừ trường hợp sau a có r – sau r không phải là một nguyên âm). Tuy nhiên chữ a trong ask, path, aunt lại được phát âm là /a:/.
Hầu hết các chữ được viết là er hoặc nguyên âm trong các âm tiết không có trọng âm thì được phát âm thành /ə/: teacher, owner…
Chữ u trong tiếng Anh có 3 cách phát âm: Phát âm là /u:/ (u dài) khi đứng sau /j/ (June); phát âm là /ʊ/ hoặc /ʌ/ trong các cách viết khác như full, sun. Khi từ có 2 chữ oo viết cạnh nhau thì hầu hết sẽ được phát âm thành /u:/ trừ các trường hợp âm cuối là k: book, look, cook…
b. Cách phát âm “-ed”
Phát âm là /t/ nếu động từ kết thúc bằng: /p, k, f, s, sh, ch, gh/
Ví dụ: jump, cook, cough, kiss, wash, watch…
Phát âm là /id/ nếu động từ kết thúc bằng /d/ hoặc /t/
Ví dụ: wait, add…
Phát âm là /d/ khi động từ kết thúc bằng: /b, g, v, đ/th/, z, j/, m, n, ng, l, r/ và tất cả các âm hữu thanh.
Ví dụ: rub, drag, love, bathe, use, massage, charge, name, learn…
Ngoại lệ: 1 số từ kết thúc bằng -ed dùng làm tính từ được phát âm là /Id/:
Ví dụ: aged, blessed, crooked, dogged, learned, naked, ragged, wicked, wretched
c. Cách phát âm “-s / -es” sau động từ chia ở ngôi thứ ba số ít trong thì HTĐ hoặc danh từ số nhiều
Nếu từ kết thúc bằng -s, -ss, -ch, -sh, – x, -z (hoặc -ze), -o, -ge, -ce thì ta phát âm là /iz/.
VD: changes; practices (cách viết khác là: practise – phát âm tương tự); buzzes; recognizes
Nếu từ kết thúc bằng -p,-k,- t,- f thì phát âm là /s/
VD: cooks; stops…
Những từ còn lại phát âm là /z/
VD: plays; stands
Chú ý: Ở đây âm cuối cùng trong phiên âm mới là quan trọng chứ không phải là chữ cái kết thúc.
VD: Với từ “laugh” kết thúc bằng phụ âm “gh” nhưng lại được phiên âm là /la:f/ – có kết thúc bằng /f/ nên khi thêm “s” ta đọc là /s/ chứ không phải là /z/.
Tương tự với từ “cough”
2.Quy tắc nhấn trọng âm:
Có một số qui tắc đánh dấu trọng âm học sinh cần chú ý như sau:
a. Động từ có 2 âm tiết: trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2
Ví dụ: En’joy, co’llect, es’cape, de’story, en’joy re’peat…
Ngoại trừ: ‘offer, ‘happen, ‘answer, ‘enter, ‘listen, ‘open, ‘finish, ‘study, ‘follow, ‘narrow…
b. Danh từ + tính từ có 2 âm tiết: trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất
Ví dụ: ‘mountain, ‘evening, ‘butcher, ‘carpet, ‘busy, ‘pretty, ‘handsome…
Ngoại trừ: ma’chine, mis’take, a’lone, a’sleep…
c. Danh từ ghép thường có trọng âm chính nhấn vào âm tiết thứ nhất
Ví dụ: ‘raincoat, ‘tea- cup, ‘film- maker, ‘shorthand, ‘bookshop, ‘footpath…
d. Các từ tận cùng là đuôi: -ic, -ics, – ian, -tion, -sion thì trọng âm nhấn vào âm thứ 2 từ cuối lên.
Ví dụ: ‘graphic, sta’tistics, mathema’tician, conver’sation, scien’tific, dic’tation, pre’cision
e. Các tiền tố trong tiếng Anh (ví dụ như un-, il-, dis-, in-…) không bao giờ có trọng âm mà thường trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai.
Ví dụ: un’able, il’legal, mis’take, un’usual, dis’like, in’definite, re’flect
